Maureen Lee, author of Sissieretta Jones, “The Greatest Singer of Her Race,” 1868-1933, will give a lecture on April 26 2013, at 5:30 pm. about Sissieretta Jones, also known as the Black Patti. The lecture is titled, “Sissieretta Jones: Navigating Race Through Song.” Before and after the lecture, the author and others in Rhode Island will exhibit some memorabilia related to Sissieretta. Come hear vocalist Cheryl Albright sing some of the songs from Mme. Sissieretta Jones’s vast and varied repertoire in a recital Saturday, April 27, at 2 p.m. in the historic Congdon Street Baptist Church, where Sissieretta worshipped and sang. Ms. Albright will be accompanied by pianist Rod Luther. Sponsored by Opera Providence, through a generous grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities. Free and open to the public.
